BOISE, Idaho - The Boise State wrestling team opened Pac-12 action with a 20-14 loss to CSU Bakersfield (4-3, 1-1 Pac-12), Saturday at Bronco Gym.

The Broncos (1-5, 0-1 Pac-12) got bonus point victories from Fred Green and Austin Dewey, and decisions from Kadyn Del Toro and Gabriel Gonzalez at 184 and 285 pounds, respectively.

"There were a few weeks in our last few duals where we just didn't have that same fire that we started off with in our first couple duals," Boise State head coach Mike Mendoza said. "We had to find our way back to that point. They came out and there was good effort throughout the line-up. There were a couple matches where we were right there to pull (off the win)."

The Roadrunners won four straight matches to open the dual before Green (157) won a 14-6 major decision. Green, ranked No. 32 in the first NCAA coaches' rankings, now has 10 bonus point wins this season.

At 165 pounds, Demetrius Romero lost a 6-5 decision to No. 20 Lorenzo De La Riva. Romero led 5-3, but gave up an escape and a takedown in the final minute. He nearly got the escape to tie the match, but was taken out of bounds and reset with less than 10 seconds left in the match.

Dewey (174) had eight takedowns and finished with over four minutes of riding time to win a 17-6 major decision over Matt Penyacsek. The redshirt senior has now tied his season high for wins at 20.

Boise State had a chance to win the dual going into the 197 pound match. Facing No. 19 ranked Matt Williams, Harley DiLulo took the match to overtime before giving up a takedown in the waning seconds of the first overtime period.

"Harley, I thought he gutted out a tough match," Mendoza said. "Unfortunately, overtime didn't go his way."

Gonzalez closed the dual with a 7-2 decision over Dominic Balmer for his third dual win of the season.

The Broncos will return to action at Bronco Gym, Jan. 28 against Stanford. The dual will start at 3 p.m. (MT).
