BOISE, Idaho (AP) Boise State men's basketball turned an 11-point first-half deficit into a 16-point second-half lead and rolled to a 78-66 win over San Diego State Saturday, at Taco Bell Arena. The Broncos (11-4, 4-0 MW) have won seven consecutive games and are 4-0 to start Mountain West play for the second straight year.
San Diego State (8-7, 0-3 MW) scored the game's first five points and ran out to a 21-10 lead in just over eight minutes. Boise State outscored the Aztecs 29-14 the rest of the first half and took a 39-35 lead into halftime. The Broncos slowly stretched the lead to double figures in the second half before a 9-2 spurt midway through the period gave them a 68-52 advantage.
The first-half turnaround was thanks in large part to Boise State's bench. James Reid scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half, including four three-pointers. Haney turned in a career-high 19 points. It is the first double-figure scoring game of his career, which he reached with 10 points before halftime. For the game, the Broncos outscored San Diego State 40-5 in bench points.
With the Aztecs leading 21-10, Reid hit three consecutive three-pointers as part of an 11-2 run that brought the Broncos within two. Another run brought them within one and Reid's fourth triple of the half put Boise State on top 35-33 with 2:18 to go in the period. San Diego State tied the game on its next possession, but Boise State took a 39-35 lead into the locker room and never relinquished it.
Paris Austin, Nick Duncan and Chandler Hutchison each scored 12 points to round out Boise State's quintet of double-figure scorers. Hutchison added a career-high 13 rebounds and matched his career high with five assists.
Duncan scored all 12 of his points in the second half on 4-of-7 three-point shooting. Duncan's fourth and final triple gave him 1,002 points for his career, becoming the 27th Bronco in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau.
Boise State's 78 points are its most scored in the 14 all-time meetings against San Diego State. The Broncos scored 30 points off of 15 San Diego State turnovers and converted 15 offensive rebounds into 21 second-chance points.
Boise State does not play a midweek game this week. The Broncos are next in action Saturday, at Fresno State. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. PT/5 p.m. MT, and will be streamed on the Mountain West Network.
