BOISE, Idaho - Boise State (7-5-1, 2-2 MW) outshot San Diego State (6-6, 3-1 MW) 21-16 and put more shots on goal (6-4) than the visitors, but the Aztecs were able to capitalize on chances in the 3rd and 85th minutes to escape the Boas Soccer Complex with a 2-0 win.
"That was a tough one," senior midfielder Sarah Taylor said after the game. "It's been a battle throughout our season, just starting with intensity and making the first five minutes our best. They scored really early, but we came back late in the first half and started controlling the tempo."
The goal in the 3rd minute came off a corner kick where the Aztecs sent a ball into the box and Stacie Moran finished the five-yard shot to the far post to give SDSU the 1-0 lead.
The Blue and Orange quickly settled in, however, and went on to control the majority of the first half. Baylee Blaser put two shots on goal in the 12th and 25th minutes, but the bulk of the Bronco chances came in the last 10 minutes of the half.
Sherle started the Bronco flurry in the 35th with a shot that went just wide, and McKenna Kynett followed it up with two phenomenal chances - one of which was saved by the Aztec keeper. Sherle had a clean look in the 41st after the keeper was drawn out of the goal, but the shot was saved by a SDSU defender who leaped into the air and was able to redirect the ball out of bounds with her body. San Diego State did just enough to get to the half with a 1-0 lead.
Boise State continued applying the pressure at the outset of the second period, as Sherle had another golden opportunity off a cross from Blaser, but the shot was deflected by a defender at the last second to send the ball over the net.
The Broncos went on to tally eight shots in the second half, being especially dangerous in the first 15 minutes coming out of the locker room.
"I thought that we had them in the second half," Taylor said. "I think if we could have popped one in the second half, the game would have changed. They got a late second goal, which is just tough."
The second Aztec goal came in the 85th when Chloe Frisch received a pass from Aliyah Utush and put two touches on it moving to her right at the top of the box, eventually unleashing a shot that just got past a diving Janelle Flores to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
The Broncos pressed in the final five minutes, but San Diego State was able to hold on for the 2-0 victory.
Sherle led all players with six shots, while Blaser and Taylor both tallied three apiece. Flores finished the day with two saves.
"I know we're going to fight every game, have some good results, and have some unlucky ones," Taylor said. "It's a bummer that we went 1-1 this weekend, but we're going to be okay. We have a lot of games left and I'm confident in what this team can do."
Boise State will return to the Boas Soccer Complex and host Air Force and Colorado College next weekend with the games scheduled for Friday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 8 at noon, respectively.
