Boise State senior outside hitter Sierra Nobley was featured today on the Mountain West Network. In the first three weeks of the season the native of Scottsdale, Ariz., has set the Boise State (1,511) and Mountain West Conference (1,624) career kills records.
To Start The Season . . .
Nobley entered the year with 1,467 career kills sitting in second-place on the kills list, 47 short of the Boise State record of 1,510. In relation to the conference record the senior started the year in 12th-place, 156 kills short of tying league mark of 1,623.
Nobley Gets the Boise State Record . . .
It took Nobley only until the fourth match of the season to break the program record for kills. It came in the home opener and the first match of the Boise State Invitational against 10th-ranked BYU on Thursday, Aug. 31, in Bronco Gym.
She entered the contest needing four kills for the record, she wasted no time at all versus the Cougars getting her fourth kill in set one that made the score 18-10 BYU. She finished the match with a team-high 23 kills to give her 1,530.
Cameron Flunder held the previous school record of 1,510 set from 2003-06 accomplished in 114 matches (412 sets), Nobley broke the mark in 97 matches (339 sets).
Nobley Breaks MW Record . . .
The senior outside hitter started her assault on the Mountain West record in week one at the Sun Devil Classic (Aug. 25-26) when she recorded 40 kills to move her to 1,507 all-time and into eight-place on the kills list, 106 short of tying the record.
Week two saw Nobley break the Boise State career record versus No. 10 BYU before finishing the Boise State Invitational (Aug. 31-Sept. 2) with 71 kills. That gave her 1,578 kills after six contests and sitting in fourth-place, 45 short of tying the conference record.
It took everything she could muster in week three going into the third match and last set of the UC Davis Invitational to secure the MW's all-time record. Nobley needed 13 kills heading into the Portland State contest to break the record, she tallied 15. The decisive kill came with her third kill of the third set to make the score 5-1 Broncos. She added two more giving her 15 kills in Boise State's sweep of the Vikings giving her 1,626 overall.
The New Challenge . . .
From this point forward Nobley's school and conference career kills records are tied together at 1,626. Her challenge now is to see how much further she can stretch her record in the final 21 regular season matches starting with top-ranked Minnesota this Friday, Sept. 15, at 5:30 p.m. in Bronco Gym durng the Boise State Classic.
