BOISE, Idaho - Redshirt junior linebacker Leighton Vander Esch was voted the Boise State Athlete of the Week (Sept. 11-17) by Bronco fans Monday.
Vander Esch captured 56 percent of the vote, with Donny Hopoi of men's golf (25 percent) and Janelle Flores from the women's soccer team (19 percent) were also nominated.
In Thursday's 28-14 victory over New Mexico, Vander Esch was all over the field for the Bronco defense once again in Thursday's 28-14 win over New Mexico. The redshirt junior made 13 tackles, and had a hand in both Bronco takeaways. First, Vander Esch stripped New Mexico running back Richard McQuarley on the opening drive, as safety Kekoa Nawahine picked up the loose ball and returned it to the Lobo 46, setting up the Broncos' opening touchdown drive. Vander Esch struck again in the fourth quarter, snaring an interception after redshirt senior Gabe Perez hit New Mexico quarterback Coltin Gerhart as he threw.
Overall, the Bronco defense held the Lobo triple option to just 3.9 yards per rushing attempt, and held New Mexico to just 14 points.
Also Nominated: Janelle Flores (Women's Soccer), Donny Hopoi (Men's Golf)
