COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Boise State junior Abbey Sorensen has been named the Mountain West Conference Swimmer of the Week for meets held January 15-21 by the league's office, as well as College Swimming's Mountain West Swimmer of the Week. She helped Boise State to a commanding home victory over conference foe Wyoming by having a hand in 40 of the team's points in a 187-112 victory over the Cowgirls. This is Sorensen's first career honor for either organization.
Sorensen recorded two individual victories and was a part of both relay wins for Boise State her as performance helped keep the Broncos' win streaks in dual competitions alive. They have now won nine-straight duals overall and have a home win streak of 23 straight dating back to February of 2009.
She opened the meet by swimming the anchor leg of the 200-yard medley relay turning in an event-best 50-yard free time of 22.84 as the team won the race with a 1:43.04, the ninth-fastest time this season in the MW.
Her first individual victory at the meet came in the 50-yard freestyle race where she clocked a NCAA "B" cut time of 22.97, more than a full second faster than second place. Sorensen's time ranks as the ninth-best time in the conference this year.
The second individual win for Sorensen was in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:59.38, more than three seconds quicker than the second place swimmer and 25th fastest time in the MW this season.
The final victory Sorensen had was as a member of Boise State's 400-yard freestyle relay team where she swam the second leg in 50.84 which was the second-best time of any leg in the race. The team's final time was 3:26.14 which ranks 11th in the MW this year.
Sorensen and her Bronco teammates will look to extend their current overall win streak to 10 straight in duals as they hit the road this weekend for Flagstaff, Ariz., where they will face the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks in a high-elevation dual meet.
