SOOMIS, Calif. - The Boise State men's golf team opened the spring season with a third place finish as a team, led by sophomore Brian Humphreys' third place finish as an individual, Tuesday at the Waves Challenge.
The Broncos shot 915 (314-308-293, +51), finishing one stroke behind second-place UCSB. Pepperdine, the tournament host, won with a three-round score of 877 (+13).
Boise State lowered their team score each round, and four-of-the-five members of the lineup shot their lowest score of the tournament in the final round. The team also led the field in birdies, battling gusty winds to make 39 over three rounds.
Humphreys shot 222 (78-72-72, +6), to record his fourth top 10 finish of the season, ninth of his career. Senior Donny Hopoi finished a stroke back of the top 10 in a tie for 12th, shooting 228 (80-73-75, +12).
Freshman Jun Ho Won finished second in the field with 11 birdies, shooting 232 (79-81-72, +16) to finish 20th. Tristan Rohrbaugh made two eagles and finished at 17-over (77-82-74 - 233) to finish tied for 21st, placing all four Bronco scores in the top 25.
Mason Schulze shot 243 (80-86-77, +27) to round out the Boise State lineup.
The Broncos will return to action at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, Feb. 16-18.
