BOISE, Idaho – Lilian Poling and Corey Patton Lossner's come-from-behind singles wins highlighted the day for the Broncos on the opening day of the Barb Chandler Classic in Boise, Idaho. In all, Boise State collected eight total victories Friday going 1-1 in doubles and 7-1 in singles matches.
The tournament was hampered by rain late in the afternoon which caused a two and a half hour delay and forced the action indoors to the Boas Indoor Tennis Center. It also postponed most of the second round on singles matches until Saturday.
"I thought today was great, we came out and got the job done on opening day," said Boise State head coach Beck Roghaar. "We won eight of the 10 matches we played and that was awesome on the first day. More than that, I was happy to see how we won those matches and how we played them. The things we have been working on this fall and focusing a lot on during practice we're starting to see come to through in matches now, it's giving our players a lot of confidence out there. Overall, it was a great day for us and I'm looking forward to us playing just as hard tomorrow."
Poling, after dropping the first set in a lengthy tie-breaker, was able to claw her way back to retake the lead and knock off Idaho State's Hristina Cvetkovic 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4 and advance to the quarterfinal round of the Blue Flight.
Wilhelmina Palmer continued her already-dominant fall season with a pair of strong victories. Palmer first took down Louise Waite of Eastern Washington 6-1, 6-0 in the round of 16, then went on to face Laura Spataro of Idaho who she defeated by a score of 6-0, 6-4 to advance to the semifinal round of the Blue Flight.
Also advancing to the Blue Flight quarterfinals was Vanessa Timm. The sophomore won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 against Zoey Nelson of Eastern Washington in her lone singles match of the day.
In the singles Orange Flight, Wiktoria Nosek cruised past Montana State's Enni Zander in straight sets 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinal round.
A pair of freshmen led the way in the singles White Flight as both picked up victories in their lone contests. Sydnie Binder handed a straight-set defeat to Eastern Washington's Marta Heinen 6-1, 6-2. Meanwhile, Corey Patton Lossner rallied from 5-2 down in set one with five-straight wins to take it 7-5, then followed with a 6-4 set two victory to sweep Idaho State's Adriene Pavek. Both Binder and Patton Lossner advance into Saturday's quarterfinal round.
In doubles play, the Broncos went 1-1 with Timm and Nosek defeating Andrea Osborn and Adriene Pavek of Idaho State 8-1, while Binder and Patton Lossner dropped a tight contest in a tiebreaker to Faye Worall and Stephanie Broussard of Eastern Washington 8-7(4).
Play will continue Saturday at the Appleton Tennis Center for the main draw, while the consolation draws will play at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center, the action starts at 9 a.m. at both facilities.
