BOISE, Idaho – Bronco doubles partners Wilhelmina Palmer and Lilian Poling play a lot of matches together, but tomorrow they will be playing against each other for a change as they square off in the championship match of the Blue singles flight of the Barb Chandler Classic.
"I thought it was another great day for the Broncos here at home," said Boise State head coach Beck Roghaar. "I'm really proud of the way we competed on a lot of courts across the board today. I think the team is starting to see the tip of the iceberg for what we are capable of when we really learn and trust in the process."
In her quarterfinal round, Poling cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Colorado's Brigitte Beck. Her semifinal round would take a lot more guts, as she had to claw her way back from being down 5-2 in the first set to come back and win 7-5, 2-6, 6-0.
Palmer's semifinal round was against a familiar face, teammate Vanessa Timm who earned a tough 7-6, 6-4 win over Montana's Julia Ronney in her quarterfinal match. Palmer got the better of her fellow sophomore in a 6-1, 6-3 contest to propel her to the championship. Tomorrow's match will be a rematch of last year's BCC championship match, where Palmer came out as champion and won the tournament as a freshman.
"I'm really excited to see Wilhemina (Palmer) and Lilian (Poling) mix it up tomorrow in the Blue Flight singles final for the second-straight year," Roghaar said. "As well as watching our two doubles teams that made finals. It will be fun to watch Willie (Palmer) and Lil (Poling) take on a team from Idaho the Blue Flight championship, while Vanessa (Timm) and Wiktoria (Nosek) battle for the Orange Flight title."
As usual, doubles success was also on display for the Broncos. Before they began their singles dominance on the day, Palmer and Poling earned their way to another championship in the Blue flight doubles. It started with a quarterfinal win against Julia Ronney and Bianca Bostrom from Montana 8-5, followed by a semifinal victory over Idaho's Laura Spataro and Maggie Chen 8-4 to send them to tomorrow's championship match.
In the Orange flight doubles, Wiktoria Nosek and Timm also earned their way to tomorrow's championships. They took down the duo of Marta Heinen and Rylee Braeden from Eastern Washington by a score of 8-4 and solidified themselves in tomorrow's championship round as well.
Freshman Sydnie Binder put together a solid run in the White singles flight, as she took down Alex Walker from Montana by a decisive score of 6-0, 6-3 to put herself in the semifinals. However, the semifinal match against Faye Warrell of Eastern Washington would prove to be a challenge as she dropped it 6-1, 6-2.
Tomorrow's championships are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at Appleton Tennis Center on the Boise State campus.
