Boise State Holds Off Utah State in Five

Roberts and Hughes combined for 27 kills, four service aces, 17 digs and seven blocks on Senior Night to lead Broncos to victory.

BOISE, Idaho - Seniors Sabryn Roberts and Morgan Hughes combined for 27 kills, four service aces, 17 digs and seven blocks on Senior Night to help the Broncos hold off a pesky Utah State team in five sets 23-25, 25-11, 25-23, 14-25, 15-9 Tuesday in Bronco Gym. After Utah State won the first set, Boise State rallied claiming wins in the second and third to take the match lead. However, the Aggies would not go away as they came back to take the fourth decisively to force the contest into a fifth set.

The fifth opened with the teams trading points initially and were tied at 4-4 when Boise State surged into control. Behind Roberts' serving the Broncos stormed into the lead rolling off a 7-0 run that included three-consecutive service aces by the senior. By the time Roberts was finished serving she had paced the Blue and Orange into an 11-4 advantaged. The Broncos then put the set away 15-9 over the Aggies to clinch the match 3-2, it was the second time this season that Boise State went five to beat the Aggies.

"I'm really excited that we were able to pull out the win," said Boise State head coach Shawn Garus. "What happens on Senior Night is that added emotion which can cause a lot of stress when things don't go well. We had to play our way through that and thankfully we came out with a win. I was proud of the way the seniors led the team back and how hard they played tonight. Sabryn (Roberts) was huge in the fifth with her serving that gave us such a big lead and momentum."

The victory over Utah State improves Boise State to 18-10 overall and 10-7 in Mountain West play. The Broncos have now won seven of their last nine contests heading into the regular season finale this Thursday at Air Force.

This is only the third time this season that the Broncos have rallied for a win after dropping the first set and are now 3-8 in those matches. Boise State also improved to 18-1 when holding its opponent below 20 percent hitting.

Hughes and Kiley Lewis tied for the lead in kills as each recorded career-highs in the win with 16, Lewis tied her high. Hughes finished the contest hitting 27 percent and added two assists, four digs and four blocks to her kill total and accounted for a team-high 18 points. Lewis, a sophomore, hit a team-high 36.1 percent and had one assist, five digs and three blocks to finish with 17.5 points.

"It was an emotional game for Sabryn (Roberts) and I as the two seniors playing our last home game here at Boise State," commented Hughes. "But I think overall, we came back and came in clutch during the fifth set, it was awesome how our team came through and pulled out the win."

Roberts recorded her team-high 12th double-double of the year on 11 kills and 13 digs, in addition to one assist, four service aces and three blocks to finish with 16.5 points. She will need four kills at Air Force on Thursday to move into third place on the Boise State career kills list, currently sitting at 1,278.

"I'm really sad that this was my last match here in front of Bronco Nation," said Roberts. "It's been a great four years and I am going to miss it so much."
