The Bowerman - Release
NEW ORLEANS -Allie Ostrander was named to the 2018 Women's Mid-Outdoor Watch List for The Bowerman - the highest honor for a college track and field athlete. Since the award's inception in 2009, today's news means that Ostrander becomes Boise State's first Watch List honoree in program history.
Ostrander is only one of three distance athletes on the list, as she is joined by Karissa Schweizer (Missouri) and Elinor Purrier (New Hampshire).
The other seven athletes are Kendall Ellis (USC - Sprints), Maggie Ewen (ASU - Throws), Aleia Hobbs (LSU - Sprints), Lexi Jacobus (Arkansas - Pole Vault), Sydney McLaughlin (Kentucky - Hurdles/Sprints), Keturah Orji (Georgia - Jumps) and Gabby Thomas (Harvard - Sprints/Jumps).
Ostrander is the lone newcomer on this iteration of The Bowerman Watch List, as she replaced Lynna Irby (Georgia - Sprints) from the post-indoor version.
The Kenai, Alaska native began making her case for the illustrious award at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, where she helped the Broncos to 17th place as a team with 12 points, good for its best finish at the indoor championship in program history.
She was second in the 5,000m thanks to a time of 8:54.35, just eight-hundredths of a second off her school and Mountain West record she set as a freshman.
The Bronco distance medley relay team of Alexis Fuller, Chelsea Walker, Amy Pfaff and Ostrander ran a 10:58.93 for the fastest time in school history, giving Boise State four points in the team race.
The first portion of the outdoor season has also been extremely successful for Ostrander, as she ran a 9:38.57 to win the invitational 3,000m steeplechase race at the Stanford Invitational (March 31). The time was a meet record, the 14th-fastest in NCAA history and it also made her the eighth-best performer in collegiate history.
Three weeks later, Ostrander's time is still the fastest in NCAA Division I this season. She will run in the 1,500m this weekend at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
The next Watch List will be announced on May 2.
