BOISE, Idaho - Boise State's Sabryn Roberts and Janell Walley led the Broncos Saturday afternoon with a two-set victory at No. 1 pair, but it was not enough as the Washington Huskies claimed a 4-1 win.
"I'm really happy for Sabryn (Roberts) and Janell (Walley) for getting that win and being able to close a solid campaign at No. 1 pair," said head coach Shawn Garus. "It was also great to have good weather this week which led to a great experience and environment for our team. We were able to give everyone a chance to play over the last four days against the College of Idaho, the pairs tournament and the last two against Washington. It was a great way to end our season and I'm looking forward to next year."
A motivated Roberts and Walley opened their match strong and fired up after letting yesterday's contest against the Huskies top pair of Jordan Gardiner and Kimmy Anderson get away from them 21-19, 21-19. This afternoon the Bronco tandem earned a measure of revenge defeating the same Washington duo 21-17, 21-16 to notch the blue an orange's lone win ─ excluding a exhibition win by Celine Christensen and Drew Hannemann ─ on Saturday.
The day opened with the No. 5 pairs and first exhibition match. Boise State's Christensen and Hannemann claimed a 21-19, 21-19 win over Washington's Emma Calle and Chloe Newton in a exhibition.
However in contests that counted towards the team score, Washington opened by claiming four straight wins on courts five, three, four and two, respectively, to put the match away up 4-0 over the Broncos heading into the final match. Roberts and Walley's win on court one finished the day and 2018 campaign off for Boise State.
This was also the final match in the careers of three seniors, Jaymee-Lee Bulda who played at No. 3 pair with Jensen Allen (Bulda is the third Bronco all-time to compete for four years on the Boise State beach volleyball team); Brindl Langley, who teamed up with Kiley Lewis at No. 2 pair; and Idaho native, Skye Southwick who competed at No. 4 pair with Kenna Hanses.
The Broncos wrapped up their fifth season of competition with a 3-11 overall record.
