FORT COLLINS, Colo. –
The Boise State women's golf team surpassed Monday's impressive start to the Ptarmigan Ram Classic, extending their lead to 11 strokes during Tuesday's second round. The Broncos shot 286 (-2) on the day – a mark that ranks third on the school record book for single-round team scoring – and enter Wednesday's finale in the lead.
Overall, Boise State has shot 579 (293-286, +3) during the tournament. The team leads Mountain West foe Nevada (+14) on the team leaderboard.
"The team was ready from the start today and got a lot of birdies in early, which helped us when we got to some of the tougher holes later in the round," head coach Nicole Bird
said. "This team is starting to understand how to play as a team, and they trust one another. We just need to keep that focus tomorrow, and everything should work out."
Senior Tara Finigan
continues to lead the field, firing off a 7-under 65 in the second round to extend her lead to seven strokes. Finigan's performance is tied for the fifth-lowest single round in the nation this season, and is second on the school record book behind only Samantha Martin's 9-under 63 (Oct. 8, 2015).
On the week, Finigan has shot 133 (68-65, -11), a mark that would top the school record book for 36-hole score. She did not shoot over-par on a single hole in the second round, making seven birdies.
"Tara has been amazing both on and off the course helping the younger players gain confidence," Bird said of the senior. "Her under-par rounds are inspiring the rest of the team and it's so fun to watch!"
Finigan is followed by a trio of sophomores in Alejandra Lobelo
(72-75 – 14, +3), Nicole Suppelsa
(76-73 – 149, +5) and Lexi Perry
(77-73 – 150, +6) to round out Boise State's scoring. Junior Valentine Lacaze
concludes the lineup after posting a two-stroke improvement on Tuesday.
The tournament will conclude with tomorrow's third round. The Broncos will be paired with second-place Nevada and Nebraska. Boise State will tee off at 9:40 a.m. MT.
