Celebrating 30 Seasons of Women's Golf

No. 5 | Alex Erlandson-Gedney
Alex Erlandson-Gedney was a freshman phenom for the Boise State women’s golf team during the 1999-2000 season.
The Camarillo, Calif., native started playing golf at the age of two, following in the footsteps of her parents who were both avid golfers.
Growing up, Erlandson-Gedney had high hopes of earning a scholarship to play Division I golf, and while just an underclassman in high school, she committed to further her academic and athletic careers at UCLA.
However, after developing a staph infection entering her senior year that left her unable to walk for a few months, her future in the sport was placed in jeopardy.
Ultimately, Erlandson-Gedney decided that becoming a Bruin was not in her best interest, but she still dreamed of pursuing golf at the collegiate level.
Her coach at the time reached out to the Boise State head coach, and after visiting The City of Trees, Erlandson-Gedney knew she wanted to be a Bronco.
“I loved Boise and the smaller-town feel it had coming from southern California,” said Erlandson-Gedney.
Although she only donned the Blue and Orange for one year, Erlandson-Gedney is still one the most successful golfers to come through the program.
She was the first of two women in program history to compete at the NCAA Regional Championships, finishing tied for 116th and carding rounds of 83-81-77 (+25) at the Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz., May 11-13, 2000 (Genevieve Ling, 2015).
She registered five top-10 and seven top-25 finishes as a freshman, marks that rank tied for second and tied for sixth, respectively, in the record book.
At the 2000 Big West Championships, she tied for eighth place, earning the team’s best score (81-77-75, +17) and all-conference first-team honors.
Erlandson-Gedney also notched two tournament victories during her season with the Broncos. Her first came at the Portland Invitational, where Boise State also garnered the team title, besting second-place host Portland by 14 strokes.
The freshman led the Blue and Orange, firing 2-under-par in the tournament’s opening round and securing the individual title by nine strokes over teammate and fellow freshman Marie Beasley.
It was at the Portland Invitational that Erlandson-Gedney recalls her favorite memory, hitting a 220-yard fade approach shot on a par-5 to help pull off the victory.
Her second individual title came in the spring at the Idaho State University Bengal Classic.
Once again, Erlandson-Gedney highlighted the Broncos’ performances, carding rounds of 76-74-79 (+7) to secure the gold medal and help Boise State win its second team title of the season.
Following her year at Boise State, Erlandson-Gedney transferred to San Diego State to focus solely on academics, earning her bachelor’s degree in economics.
Today, she works in oncology, managing clinical trials in stages one and two, and has been doing so for the past 20 years.
In her free time, Erlandson-Gedney enjoys playing and teaching golf to her 6-year-old son. Furthermore, following her golf career, she started competing in triathlons and running half marathons. Today, she loves running 5Ks with her dog, Arya.
