Celebrating 30 Seasons of Women's Golf
30th Thursday
No. 3 | Hayley Young
From 2009-13, Hayley Young headlined the Boise State women’s golf team with her performances on the course.
Golf wasn’t always her sport, as she was introduced to tennis first. However, while at the courts, Young had more fun hitting the tennis balls over the backboard rather than at the backboard, and wasn’t fond of the running the sport entailed.
Thus, unbeknownst to her, her father signed her up for her first golf lesson.
“One day, without knowing where [my dad and I] were going, we arrived at the golf course for my very first lesson,” said Young. “Although I didn’t know it at the time, that was the moment my golf journey began.”
During her recruiting process, the Hawaii native knew she wanted to experience something new, and she chose to join the Blue and Orange because of her love for the city of Boise and the people at Boise State, including former golf coach Nicole Bird.
“[Coach Bird] saw my potential and gave me the opportunity to play golf and represent a great school that I’m so proud to be an alumna of,” said Young.
It didn’t take long for Young to make some noise in the record book. During her Bronco tenure, she recorded 11 top-10 and 20 top-25 finishes, marks that rank her tied for second and tied for fourth, respectively, in program history.
Young is also tied for second and fourth in single-season top-10 finishes with five (2012-13) and four (2010-11), respectively. In addition to her five top-10 finishes in 2012-13, she notched eight top-25 finishes that same year, tied for second in program history.
Furthermore, from 2011-13, Young was the Broncos’ top finisher at the conference championships, never recording a score outside the top-10. She also holds three of the best 54-hole scores in conference championship history.
At the 2013 Mountain West Championships, Young took seventh, carding rounds of 75-75-77 (+11) en route to helping Boise State to a second-place finish, the team’s highest finish since winning the 1993 Big Sky Championships.
Twice, Young was an all-conference second-team honoree, earning the accolade in 2011-12 (Western Athletic Conference) and 2012-13 (Mountain West).
To cap off her career, during her senior season, Young garnered her first victory at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic (April 8-10, 2013), firing rounds of 71-71-72 and finishing 2-under par. Her 36-hole score of 142 is tied for the fourth-lowest in Bronco history, and her tournament total of 214 is tied for the third-lowest 54-hole score all-time.
In the classroom, Young received her bachelor’s degree in social science with minors in both psychology and family studies, and she earned her master’s degree in clinical psychology.
Today, she is a human resource coordinator with a prominent manufacturing company on Oahu that supplies ready-mix concrete.
She is also a dog mom to two Havaneses, Ollie and Finn.
