Celebrating 30 Seasons of Women's Golf
30th Thursday
No. 2 | Genevieve Ling
Genevieve Ling, a member of the Boise State women’s golf team from 2013-17, etched her name into the record book in nearly every category.
The Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia native began playing golf at the age of 12, tagging along with her father and sister to the course. She also achieved black-belt status in Tae Kwon Do at the same age, and her quiet determination and hard work transferred over to her golf career.
Once Ling stepped onto campus in fall 2013, she immediately earned a spot in the Bronco women’s golf lineup.
She holds four spots in the top 10 in individual low round score, including being tied for fourth, twice, firing 68 (-4) at the Oregon State Invitational (Sept. 15, 2014) and the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic (March 7, 2016).
For two consecutive seasons in 2014-15 and 2015-16, Ling maintained a sub-75 scoring average to put her in third and fifth, respectively, in individual single-season scoring average. She is also ranked second in Boise State history in individual career scoring average with a 75.59 in 113 rounds played.
Furthermore, Ling registered 23 top-25 and 10 top-10 finishes in her career, marks that rank her second and fourth, respectively.
Additionally, during two of her seasons representing the Blue and Orange, Ling recorded seven top-25 finishes, tied for the sixth-most all-time.
Ling’s best year came in 2014-15 as a sophomore. She notched four top-10 finishes, the fourth most in program history, and her lone career victory came in spring 2015 at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic. There, Ling shot rounds of 72-73-71, finishing even par.
At the 2015 Mountain West Championships in Rancho Mirage, Calif., Ling was the Broncos’ top performer, tying for 20th and carding rounds of 79-72-77 (+12). Her second-round score of 72 is tied for fourth in individual low round at a conference championship.
Ling was named a second-team all-conference honoree and clinched a spot in the 2015 NCAA East Regional Championships in Raleigh, N.C. She is just one of two women in program history to compete in a regional championship.
After a historic career at Boise State, Ling set her eyes on the LPGA. Following graduation, she enrolled in qualifying school and made it to the second stage. Although she did not gain status in the LPGA, she earned a spot on the Symetra Tour.
However, instead of participating in the Symetra Tour, Ling went to Korea to participate in its version of “Big Break,” a golf television show for the Korean audience called “Cinderella Story.” She finished in show’s top two, which guaranteed her automatic entry into 10 events on the KLPGA for 2018.
Following her season on the KLPGA, she tried Q school again for both the CLPGA (Chinese LPGA) and TLPGA (Taiwan LPGA). Ling qualified for both tours.
At the start of 2020, Ling finished tied for 32nd in the TLPGA’s largest event, before tours were shut down across the world due to COVID-19.
The Boise State women’s golf phenom still has dreams of playing on the LPGA tour, but she will aim for the JLPGA or KLPGA if she doesn’t make the LPGA.
