Writer’s note: Without having discussed personally with everyone, I am confident in stating that Saturday’s excursion was unanimously everyone’s favorite day of the trip.
There was one item on the itinerary for Saturday: three-island boat cruise. And that was all that was needed.
The team had two concerns prior to the outing 1.) the 8 a.m. departure time and 2.) a couple unnamed players (Mya Hansen and Tatum Thompson) were concerned about sharks in the water.
We arrived early on the three-story cruise ship so that we could claim our seats early. The first story was a loading zone (you’ll hear more about the loading zone later). The second story was a dining hall with a lot of tables on the inside, with narrow walkways lining the side. The third story was the deck, with lawn chairs and tables strewn about that showcased the boat’s SPECTACULAR VIEWS.
The initial voyage took two hours, as the boat cruised along the coastline towards our first of three stops, a quaint seaside town called Skala on the island of Agistri. We had two hours to explore in the town, with a majority of the group grabbing a quick snack or coffee before jumping in the ocean on the island’s quiet beaches.
It was at this island an unnamed staff member needed sunscreen and stopped to purchase some from a market. There was no English in the store, so he picked out a bottle that had a picture of a sun on it. After applying it all over (and even having a fellow staff member rub some on his back), he noticed he was getting severely burned, and thanks to the Google Translate app, found out that he had bought bug spray instead.

Once everyone reboarded the ship, the cruiser went 15 minutes up the bay to a secluded island, filled with clear blue oceans. The boat anchored about 100 feet from the shore, allowing the passengers to swim for nearly an hour. The boat had a slide that you could use, but the highlight was two openings on either side that could allow for anyone to jump the roughly 10 feet (it seemed like a basketball hoop height to us) into the water. The swimming ended up being a workout (treading water is hard work), especially considering the zoo you had to navigate to get on the boat.
The Broncos had an absolute field day during this time, with some players jumping in upwards of 15 times. We wanted to give a special shoutout to Libby Hutton, who perfected a perfect backflip off the side of the boat even though she had never done one before (academic advisor Eric Kile pulled off the same feat). We also wanted to acknowledge the bravery exhibited by Mya Hansen, who had also never pulled off a backflip before…she instead performed what can only be described as a “reverse belly flop”…
Lunch followed the hour swimming session as the boat headed toward our final stop of the trip: Aegina. A majority of people decided to spend the two-hour time in the town indulging in ice cream and shopping habits. While shopping, most people decided to bring gifts home for loved ones, but assistant coach Mike Petrino received a gift of his own from a pigeon outside an gelato shop.
As we loaded up the ship to head home, it was very apparent that everyone on board was exhausted by the day’s activities…except for the Broncos. As the on-deck DJ cranked out some hits, several players created a makeshift dancefloor on deck. Once “Mamma Mia” came on, nearly the entire team sprinted out to dance. That decision spurred a nearly two-hour dance party on the top deck of the ship, complete with conga lines, Pitbull, and several international hits. The players were leading the show the entire time.
You brought the dynamite to the boat and it exploded with energy."our Greek tour guide Kostos, who happened to join the cruise dance party
Looking back, it’s hard to decide what was better: the view or the vibes? No matter which way you lean, both were turned all the way up.
