Alston Earns Player of the Week Award

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Boise State redshirt senior guard Derrick Alston, Jr. was named the Mountain West Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Alston averaged 21 points, five rebounds and 4.5 assists per game last week, leading the Broncos to an emphatic sweep of New Mexico. It is the second such honor of Alston's career.
Alston shot 77.3 percent from the floor in the two games against the Lobos, including 75 percent from three-point range. He scored 20 points in the first game of the series, while his personal 9-0 run was part of a 25-5 Boise State scoring spurt in the second half to put the game away. He also grabbed six rebounds.
In the second game, Alston was a perfect 9-for-9 from the field on his way to 22 points, while collecting four rebounds, six assists, two steals and a block. His scoring output included three three-pointers and four dunks, as he helped the Broncos run away with a 37-point victory for the sweep. It was the largest margin of victory in series history and Boise State's third-largest margin of victory in a conference game since 2004.
Alston became the 22nd Division I player in the last five years to score at least 22 points without missing a shot from the field or the free throw line. His highly-efficient outing marked the 77th time in the last 11 seasons a player has scored at least 22 points on 10 or fewer field goal and free throw attempts combined, against a Division I opponent. He is the third Bronco to accomplish the feat during that span, joining James Webb III (Jan. 18, 2015 at New Mexico) and Justinian Jessup (Dec. 28, 2019 vs CSUN). Boise State is the only school in the country with three such performances in the last 11 seasons.
Boise State returns to action Thursday and Saturday, against San Jose State in Phoenix.
