Three-time defending national steeplechase honors wins honor for third-straight season
iFrame:COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Allie Ostrander was announced as the 2019 Mountain West Women's Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year, as voted on by the league's coaches, Monday. With the announcement, Ostrander become the first women's athlete in conference history to win the award in back-to-back-to-back years.
The redshirt junior successfully defended her national title in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, winning in a school-record time of 9:37.73. Ostrander is the first female athlete to win three-straight national titles in the steeplechase, and only the 15th woman to win three-straight titles in the same event.
She also earned second-team All-America honors in the 5,000-meter, placing 16th.
Ostrander also earned All-Mountain West honors in both the 1,500-meter and the 5,000-meter this spring. She successfully defended her conference title in the 5,000-meter, while taking second in the 1,500-meter for the second-straight year.
In addition, she posted nation-leading marks during the outdoor season in both the steeplechase and the 10,000-meter — an event where she set the Mountain West record. She displayed her versatility by ranking in the top 20 nationally in both the 1,500-meter (12th- 4:14.76) and the 5,000-meter (17th- 15:45.66).
Ostrander was named a semifinalist for The Bowerman — track and field's highest honor — last week.
