Marisa Howard Set for First Round of Olympic Women's 3000-Meter Steeplechase

Marisa Howard will begin her Olympic campaign at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, France, on Sunday, Aug. 4, at 2:05 a.m. MT in the first round of the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Also competing in the event is Lizzie Bird, another athlete coached by Pat McCurry, who will represent Team Great Britain.
 
The first round of the 3000m steeplechase will consist of three heats and 36 runners, with the top five athletes from each advancing to the final.
 
Marisa Howard
Howard, also currently coached by McCurry, was a three-time Mountain West champion, two-time All-American, and was the national runner-up in the event in 2014 during her time as a Bronco. Following her collegiate career, she ran in two Pan American Games, and brought home the silver medal in 2019. She competed in the 2021 Olympic Trials, falling two spots shy of earning a spot on Team USA. Howard ran a new personal best time of 9:07.14 to punch her ticket to Paris, which is the eighth fastest time in the world.
 
Lizzie Bird
Lizzie Bird, a native of St. Albans Herts, England, spent her collegiate career with Princeton where she was a two-time national champion. Bird finished the 3000m steeplechase in ninth at the 2021 Summer Games, is a two-time European Championship bronze medalist, and a one-time Commonwealth Games silver medalist. At the 2024 UK Championships, Bird solidified her spot on Team Great Britain with a winning time of 9:29.67, and most recently ran a 9:09.07 at the Meeting De Paris on July 7.
