Women’s Athletic Director and Coach, Boise State 1970-83
Connie Thorngren pioneered competitive sport for women at Boise State. Joining the faculty in 1970, she introduced volleyball, track and field, basketball, and field hockey to the women’s program. In 1974, she relinquished her duties as head coach for volleyball and track and field but added the title of Director of Women’s Athletics to go with her basketball coaching position. In 1978, she became full-time basketball coach, a position she held until 1983. In 1975, her women’s basketball team won the Northwest Large College Tournament, and went onto play in Harrisonburg, Virginia, in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women National Tournament. Her record as women’s basketball coach was 179-121. In field hockey, her teams from 1973 to 175 won 48 games, lost two and tied one.
