BOISE STATE STARTS STRONG ON DAY-ONE OF BRONCO INVITATIONAL

             BOISE, Idaho The Boise State track and field team captured four first-place finishes and earned two NCAA provisional marks, Friday (Jan. 30), on day-one of the two-day Bronco Invitational at the Jacksons Indoor Track in Nampa. The meet will conclude on Saturday (Jan. 31), with events starting again at 10 a.m.

            On Friday, the Boise State women got things started by capturing individual titles in the 60-meter hurdles and the long jump. Senior sprinter Megan Olivetti (Reno, Nev/Wooster HS) won the 60m hurdles with a personal record time of 8.60. Eleni Kafourou, a senior from Athens, Greece (9th Lykeium of Pireas HS), would earn the women’s second first-place finish of the night by long jumping 20-03.00 (6.17m).

            The Boise State men showed their strength as well, earning two first-place finishes to go along with two NCAA provisional marks. The Broncos also captured the top three spots in the 60m dash and finished second through fourth in the long jump. Boise State took home first and second place in the distance medley, with its top team finishing in 10:44.15.

            Freshman Eric Capelle (Gresham, Ore/Sam Barlow HS) earned his second 60m individual title of the season, running a personal record, 6.88. His time was just good enough to edge out teammates Per Strandquist (Akarp, Sweden/Malmo Latinskola HS) and Marlon Douglas (Carenage, Trinidad/Trinity College). Strandquist turned in a time of 6.89 to capture second-place, while Douglas was close behind in third with a time of 6.98.

            In the long jump, freshman Eetu Viitala (Kuortane, Finald (Kuortane HS) turned in his top jump of the season (24-07.75/7.51m), which was good enough for second-place in the meet. The jump earned Viitala a NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Boise State senior Ryan Grinnell (Idaho Falls, Idaho/Skyline HS) also earned an NCAA provisional mark with a jump of 24-07.25 (7.50m), which was good enough for third-place. Zacharias Arnos brought home the fourth-place spot for Boise State, jumping 24-06.50/7.48m).

            Boise State’s final runner up finish would come in the men’s pole vault where Daniel Thompson, a sophomore from Vancouver, Wash (Camas HS), would vault 13-11.75/4.26m).
