Bronco Comeback Falls Short Against Lobos

2/17/2013 12:00:00 AM | Men's Basketball

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Cameron Bairstow had 16 points and seven rebounds, and reserve Jamal Fenton hit a trio of 3-pointers in the second half to lead No. 19 New Mexico to a 60-50 win over Boise State on Saturday night at The Pit/Bob King Court.

Tony Snell added 12 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Lobos (22-4, 9-2 Mountain West), who took a 38-29 lead after Snell hit two free throws with 13 minutes remaining.

But Boise State crept back into it, pulling to 47-46 with 5 minutes left following a short jumper in the paint by Derrick Marks.

The Broncos, however, failed to score on their next 11 possessions and New Mexico pulled away from the line, converting 6 of 7 foul shots during that stretch.

Marks had 19 points and seven boards for Boise State (16-8, 4-6), and Kenny Buckner came off the bench to add 11 rebounds, one shy of his career high.

Boise State held New Mexico to 34.7 percent shooting (17-for-49), the best defensive effort by the Broncos since holding Walla Walla to 21.6 percent (11-of-51). The Lobos’ shooting percentage was the lowest by a Bronco opponent in conference play since San Diego State went 15-for-49 (.313), Feb. 1, 2012.

Boise State will host Air Force Wednesday (Feb. 20) at Taco Bell Arena. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m.
