BOISE, Idaho – Boise State Director of Athletics Curt Apsey has been named one of five finalists for the Sports Business Journal's Athletic Director of the Year, an award that will be announced as part of the Sports Business Awards, which will be held virtually beginning at 5 p.m., Sept. 30.

The other finalists are Kirby Hocutt of Texas Tech, Rob Mullens of Oregon, Mack Rhoades of Baylor and Scott Stricklin of Florida.

The 2020 Sports Business Awards were initially slated to be held at the New York Marriott Marquis at Times Square in New York City, May 20. The ceremony was postponed due to the pandemic, and then ultimately moved to a virtual format. The online celebration will be hosted by Jay Williams and Laura Rutledge, and will feature 17 awards categories.

Launched in 2008, the Sports Business Awards were established by Sports Business Journal and Sports Business Daily to celebrate the excellence in the business of sports. The 2020 nominees and winners are being recognized for the period of March 1, 2019 through Feb. 28, 2020.

Apsey is now in his sixth year as the Broncos' Director of Athletics, and in each of the two years preceding the pandemic - 2017-18 and 2018-19 - Boise State finished as the top athletic department among Group of Five schools in the Learfield IMG College Directors' Cup Standings.

Eight programs have combined for 18 conference championships during Apsey's tenure as athletic director, including football (two), gymnastics (four), men's cross country (two), soccer (two), softball, swimming & diving (two), women's basketball (four) and volleyball.

Academically, Boise State Athletics has repeatedly experienced banner years. In spring of 2020, the department's student-athletes overcame a challenging spring semester to post an all-department grade-point average of 3.46. Bronco student-athletes also combined for 125 Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Awards this past season, a school record.
