BOISE, Idaho – Former Boise State student-athlete Jeron Johnson has been named the Broncos' cornerbacks coach, head coach Andy Avalos announced, Wednesday.
"Having been part of this brotherhood, Jeron understands our culture and knows what we're building on here," Avalos said. "He has lived this student-athlete experience, taken what he learned into a professional career – both on and off the field – and I am excited to have him here, mentoring the young men we're bringing into this program."
This is the first collegiate coaching job for Johnson.
"I am extremely thankful to Coach Avalos and his family for giving me this opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream of coming back home and coaching for my alma mater," Johnson said. "This is a great moment for me and my family. I'm excited to get to work and develop these young men, not only as players, but as young men of high character. It's going to be fun!"
He appeared in 49 games for the Broncos from 2007-10 and recorded 194 tackles and eight interceptions. After signing a free agent contract with the Seattle Seahawks, he spent six years in the NFL, four with Seattle and one with Washington before returning to the Seahawks in 2016. He notched 75 tackles in 64 games as a professional, and was a member of the Seahawks' 2013 squad that won Super Bowl XLVIII.
Following his NFL career, Johnson coached defensive backs at Eastside Catholic High School in 2018 and worked as the school's strength and agility teacher for the last two years.
He earned a bachelor's degree in communication from Boise State in 2010.
