BOISE, Idaho – Boise State redshirt senior Avery Williams was named a Walter Camp All-American, Thursday.
A native of Pasadena, Calif., Williams earned his spot as a kick returner on the oldest All-America team in the country.
The selection was the fourth first-team honor as a kick returner (Football Writers Association of America, Phil Steele and USA Today) and sixth overall. He was the top return specialist according to The Sporting News and the all-purpose player on the American Football Coaches Association's first team. His six first-team awards are the most for a Bronco in the same season.
Boise State is one of three schools to have a player named to the Walter Camp All-America First Team each of the last two seasons, joining Iowa and Ohio State. Curtis Weaver garnered the award in 2019.
Williams has been named second team by The Athletic (all-purpose) and CBS Sports (punt returner and kick returner) and third team by the Associated Press (all-purpose). His 10 honors are the most by a Bronco in a single season.
Williams leads the nation this season with four special teams touchdowns, scoring on a pair of kickoff returns and two punt returns.
In the Mountain West Championship, he returned a punt 69 yards for a touchdown to tie the NCAA record for career return touchdowns with nine (six punts, three kickoffs).
He is the only player to rank in the top 20 nationally in both punt returns (third, 15.3 average) and kickoff returns (12th, 28.1).
Williams is the first Boise State returner to be an All-American since Kyle Wilson in 2008 and the first Bronco to earn a first-team honor on special teams since place kicker Mike Dodd (Kodak) in 1992.
