BOISE, Idaho – Boise State defensive back Kekaula Kaniho was announced as one of 12 semifinalists for the 2021 Wuerffel Trophy, Wednesday.

The Wuerffel Trophy honors college football players who serve others, celebrate their impact and inspire greater service in the world. As part of the National Football Federation's Collegiate Awards, the Wuerffel Trophy was the first major award honoring the character of service to others.

Named after Hall of Fame quarterback Danny Wuerffel, this award represents that which is good in the world of college sports. As a nationally recognized humanitarian, Wuerffel inspires leaders to use their influence to make a positive impact.

Kaniho has been extremely active in the Boise State community outside of football. During his five years on campus, he visited local middle and elementary schools and was a great role model to younger students. He discussed healthy lifestyles, good sportsmanship and the benefits that play can have for everyone. Kaniho also participates in the football program's "Bronco vs. Bullying" anti-bullying campaign.

The Kahuku, Hawaii native returned in 2021 for a fifth year with the Broncos. In his career, he has registered 204 tackles, including 24.5 tackles-for-loss (five sacks), five interceptions, 28 pass breakups, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

Most recently, Kaniho played in his 55th-career game as a Bronco against Air Force (Oct. 16), setting the school record.

Three finalists for the award will be announced Nov. 23. The formal announcement of the 2021 recipient will be made Dec. 9 on The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN and the presentation of the 2021 Wuerffel Trophy will occur on Feb. 25, 2022 at the 53rd All Sports Association Awards Banquet in Fort Walton Beach.
