BOISE, Idaho – A trio of Boise State Broncos were named Athlon Preseason All-Mountain West First Team, highlighting 15 selections by the publication.
Wide receiver Khalil Shakir and offensive lineman John Ojukwu on offense and safety Kekaula Kaniho on defense received first-team honors. The 15 overall selections tied Nevada for most in the conference.
Shakir recorded 52 receptions for 719 yards and six touchdowns in 2020. He added 148 rushing yards and was one of only two players nationally with 700 yards receiving and 100 yards rushing last season. He was a Pro Football Focus Honorable Mention All-American and All-Mountain First-Team honoree who led the Mountain West (10th nationally) with 7.43 receptions per game.
Ojukwu, along with Jake Stetz (second team) and Garrett Curran (third team), were the only Broncos who started every game on the offensive line last season. Ojukwu and Stetz were All-Mountain West Second Team in 2020 while Curran received honorable mention.
Kaniho, defensive lineman Shane Irwin (second team) and linebacker Riley Whimpey (third team) were each All-Mountain West Second Team last fall. Kaniho led the Broncos with seven pass breakups and was named the Senior CLASS Award winner for the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Irwin led Boise State with six sacks and Whimpey paced the Broncos with 61 tackles.
Running back George Holani (second team) was the 2019 Mountain West Freshman of the Year before injuries limited him to four games last season. Cornerback Markel Reed (third team) played in all-seven games last fall, recording 16 tackles and three pass breakups.
Quarterback Hank Bachmeier, wide receiver CT Thomas, linebackers Ezekiel Noa and Demitri Washington, defensive back JL Skinner and kicker Jonah Dalmas each garnered fourth-team honors from Athlon. Thomas, Noa and Dalmas were All-Mountain West Honorable Mention in 2020.
Both Bachmeier and Washington saw their playing time limited due to injury in 2020. Thomas has a reception in 37-straight games, the second-longest active streak in the country. Noa (40) and Skinner (37) were second on the team in tackles at their position last year. Dalmas was 7-for-8 in field goal attempts, including a pair of makes from 50-plus yards, and 30-for-31 in PAT.
