BOISE, Idaho – Sophomore Yasmin Marghini and senior Jonathan Shields have qualified for the 2022 Division I Women's and Men's Cross Country Championships in Stillwater, Okla., the NCAA announced, Saturday afternoon.
Â
"I'm excited for both Jonathan and Yasmin to be able to compete at the NCAA Nationals meet," said head coach Corey Ihmels.
Â
The NCAA selected 38 individuals through an automatic qualifier and at-large selection process.  All individual qualifiers must have finished in the top 25 in their respective regions.
Â
Marghini led the Broncos across the finish line in the women's 6k, notching a 10th-place finish with a personal best of 19:35.0 at Friday's NCAA West Regional.
Â
"Yasmin had break out race at conference and continued that trend [Friday]," said Ihmels. "I'm confident she will be up in the mix next week at Nationals."
Â
Shields paced the Broncos in the men's 10k at the NCAA West Regional and improved his position from 29th place at the 1k mark to 10th overall, setting a personal record with 28:41.2.
Â
"Jonathan has steadily moved up each year and for him to take the next big step in his last year is exciting," said Ihmels.
Â
Marghini and Shields secured individual qualifying spots in the West Region for their respective championship races. This marks the first trip to a cross country national championship for Marghini and the second one Shields.
Â
Marghini, the 2022 MW runner-up in the women's 6k, has paced the Broncos all season. At the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational (Oct. 14) she led Boise State in the championship race, earning a 44th-place finish.
Â
With her silver-medal performance, Marghini received first-team all-conference recognition at the Mountain West Championship this season.
Â
Shields was the Broncos' top-finisher for a majority of the season. At the Joe Piane-Notre Dame Invitational (Sept. 30), he paced the Broncos in the men's five mile race, garnering a 12th-place finish.
Â
This year's national championships are hosted by Oklahoma State, Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course in Stillwater, Okla. The national championships will be streamed live on ESPNU beginning at 8 a.m. MT.
