COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Following a sweep of San Diego State and UNLV this past week, Boise State men's basketball players Abu Kigab and Tyson Degenhart were named Mountain West Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively, the league office announced Monday.
The sweep of the conference's weekly awards is just the second by a MW school this season, and the first since Air Force did it, Nov. 29.
Kigab's award is the first of his career, and the first for a Bronco since Derrick Alston picked up the accolade, Feb. 22, 2021. It is also just the fourth for a Boise State men's basketball player in the last four seasons.
For Degenhart, the award is his ninth of the season, more than the rest of the league's freshmen combined. This is the sixth-straight week Degenhart has been honored with the award, and the ninth time in the last 11 weeks.
Kigab scored at least 20 points in each of the Broncos' two games this past week, averaging 22.0 points in leading Boise State to a pair of wins and keeping the team in first place in the conference standings. Kigab went 13-of-20 (.650) on the week, including 5-of-7 (.714) from 3-point range. He also averaged 4.5 rebounds, and added three assists and two steals.
Against San Diego State (Feb. 22), Kigab went to the free throw line with 1.7 seconds on the clock and the Broncos trailing by one. He sank both attempts, putting the Broncos in front and securing a 58-57 victory. Kigab finished with 21 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Including the game-winning free throws, he finished 9-for-11 from the line.
Against the Runnin' Rebels (Feb. 26), Kigab scored 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting (.667), including 3-for-4 from 3-point range (.750). He added six rebounds, two assists and a steal against UNLV, as Boise State captured its school-record seventh road conference victory, a feat that has been accomplished just 10 times previously in conference history.
Kigab drew 13 fouls on the week, including seven against SDSU and six against UNLV.
In the Broncos' victory over UNLV, Degenhart scored 10 points and pulled down three rebounds, and added an assist and a steal. It was Degenhart's 16th game this season in double figures, and the Broncos are 13-3 in such games.
In the win over San Diego State, Degenhart scored six points and pulled down seven rebounds, including a career-high five on the offensive end.
Boise State closes out its regular-season home schedule Tuesday (March 1), hosting Nevada for Senior Night. Tip against the Wolf Pack is scheduled for 7 p.m.
