BOISE, Idaho – Boise State wide receiver Khalil Shakir was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the 2022 National Football League Draft, Saturday.
Shakir was selected with the fifth pick in the fifth round (No. 148 overall), and is the fifth Bronco to be drafted by the Bills all-time. The Bills' five selections of Boise State football players are tied for the second-most by a single team (Denver and Seattle), trailing only Dallas (seven).
Â
He is the first Bronco to be selected by Buffalo since Tanner Vallejo was taken in the sixth round (No. 195 overall) in 2017, and is the Bills' highest selection of a Boise State football player in NFL Draft history.
Â
A native of Murrieta, Calif., Shakir was a two-time first-team All-Mountain West honoree. In 2021, he notched career highs in receptions (77) and receiving yards (1,117) and recorded at least 65 yards receiving in each of the Broncos' 12 games.
Â
Shakir ranks fourth all-time at Boise State in yards receiving (2,878), fifth in receptions (208), tied for sixth in 100-yard receiving games (10) and tied for ninth in touchdown receptions (20).
Â
Boise State has had a player drafted in 13-straight years, and an offensive player selected in nine-consecutive seasons. Each streak is the longest by a school outside of a Power Five conference, and the Broncos' streaks entered this year's draft tied for 22nd nationally and tied for 13th nationally, respectively.
Â
The Broncos have now had a player with collegiate eligibility remaining drafted in nine-consecutive years. Boise State entered this year's draft as one of only nine schools with a streak of at least eight-straight years, joining Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, LSU, Penn State, Stanford and Washington.
Â
Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence (2014) started the streak, followed by running back Jay Ajayi (2015), linebacker Kamalei Correa (2016), running back Jeremy McNichols (2017), linebacker Leighton Vander Esch (2018), running back Alexander Mattison (2019), offensive lineman Ezra Cleveland (2020) and tight end John Bates and defensive back Avery Williams (2021).
