Skinner Named Jim Thorpe Award Candidate

BOISE, Idaho – Boise State safety JL Skinner was named to the 2022 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Watch List, the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame (OSHOF) and Jim Thorpe Association announced Monday.
The award is given annually to the best defensive back in college football based on performance on the field, athletic ability and character. Established in 1986, the award is named after history's greatest all-around athlete, Jim Thorpe.
This year's preseason watch list included 35 of the nation's top defensive backs, representing 10 conferences and one independent university. Skinner is just one of two student-athletes from the Mountain West to earn a spot on the preseason list.
A native of San Diego, Calif., Skinner was selected to the 2022 Preseason All-MW Football Team. He earned second-team all-conference accolades in 2021, leading the Broncos in tackles (92), solo tackles (66) and fumble recoveries (three), and his two forced fumbles tied for first among Boise State defenders last season. He also recorded seven tackles-for-loss, five pass breakups and two interceptions, marks that tied for the second-most on the team last season.
Semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award will be announced Oct. 24.
