BOISE, Idaho – James Montgomery has been named running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Boise State, head football coach Andy Avalos announced, Tuesday.
Montgomery held the same positions last year at Fresno State as the Bulldogs won the Mountain West and the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl. Jordan Mims rushed for 1,372 yards and 18 touchdowns to earn All-MW First-Team honors under Montgomery's tutelage.
"James has a history of developing players and his knowledge of football goes well beyond the running backs position," Avalos said. "His ability to connect with the players and be a difference maker in recruiting will be just as important."
A native of Sacramento, Calif., Montgomery played in the then Pac-10 (2006-10) at both California and Washington State. After coaching in the prep ranks for two seasons, he became the quality control coach at Weber State in 2013.
He spent the next six seasons at Sacramento State. After serving two years as an offensive assistant, Montgomery was promoted to running backs coach in 2016 and added recruiting coordinator duties in 2018. The Hornets were co-champions in the Big Sky in 2019, Montgomery's final season at Sacramento State, and added titles in 2021 and 2022 with several players he recruited.
Montgomery's final stop before Fresno State was a two-year stint at Cal Poly (2020-21) as the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator.
In addition to Montgomery's hire, Avalos announced Bronco cornerbacks coach Demario Warren has added special teams coordinator duties. Warren completed his first year with the Broncos in 2022 after 14 seasons at Southern Utah, including six as a head coach. The Thunderbirds captured the Big Sky title in 2017.
