Vinny Peretta, who threw game-winning touchdown pass, set to raise the flag
BOISE, Idaho – Vinny Peretta, the running back and defensive back who threw the game-winning touchdown pass in overtime of the 2007 Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma, is set to raise the Blue Chaos Flag Saturday as the Broncos host San Jose State.
Â
A three-time Western Athletic Conference Champion, Peretta wrapped up a stellar four-year career in the Treasure Valley by recording 479 rushing yards on 82 carries with six touchdowns while catching 74 passes for 991 yards and four scores. He averaged 5.8 yards per carry and 13.4 yards per catch over his four years in the Orange and Blue.
Â
Peretta was involved in 158 offensive plays from scrimmage in his career but perhaps none more famous than the 2007 Fiesta Bowl in overtime as he connected with Derek Schouman on a five-yard pass. Rolling out to the right, Peretta lofted the ball to the end zone, guiding it right into Schouman's waiting hands to pull the Broncos within one, 42-41. That set up the historic Statue of Liberty play that propelled Boise State to the 43-42 win over the Sooners.
Â
With an official kickoff time of 6:02 p.m., Peretta is scheduled to raise the flag at 6 p.m. As Saturday's game is sold out, fans are encouraged to arrive early so that they can be in their seats as the Broncos take the field at 5:58 p.m., followed by the raising of the Blue Chaos flag at 6 p.m.
Â
Following a short stint in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings, Peretta retired from the game and moved back to Boise.
