Training expands tools to combat stress, promote mental well-being, and support others
BOISE, Idaho – In recognition of National Stress Awareness Day, Boise State Athletics is sharing another tool in its approach to support student-athletes to address stress, promote good mental well-being, and offer guidelines to recognize when someone might be struggling with mental health.
The two-hour Be There training is a free learning module designed to increase mental health literacy and provide knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to safely support anyone who may be struggling with mental health. The training was created by Jack.org in partnership with Born This Way Foundation.
"This fall, we offered the Be There training to all student-athletes," said Stephanie Donaldson, director of athletic counseling & performance psychology. "The training provides real-life examples of how to be more compassionate, helpful, and a good listener. Nearly 50 percent of our student-athletes have already completed the training. This is just one more resource we have added to meet the needs of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff."
The Be There Certificate is a free, self-paced learning experience designed to increase mental health literacy. The training provides a deep understanding of "Be There's 5 Golden Rules — a simple but actionable framework on how to recognize when someone might be struggling with mental health, the role in supporting that person, and how to connect the person with available help. Visit Be There for more information.
The training supports the on-going work of BroncoBOLD. Launched in 2019, BroncoBOLD is a mental health initiative created by a committee of Boise State student-athletes, representing multiple sport programs. All committee members were passionate about mental health advocacy work and dedicated to championing a message of hope, help, and resiliency with fellow student-athletes and their community utilizing the platform of sport. BroncoBOLD continues to focus on education and proactive prevention utilizing multiple platforms, including: social media, workshops, sponsored events, and recognition at specific athletic competitions.
