Broncos, Rebels to vie for title in Las Vegas on Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. MT on FOX

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After finishing the season in a three-way tie for first place in the Mountain West standings alongside San Jose State and UNLV, Boise State will advance to the MW Championship Game at UNLV.

The Broncos and Rebels will kick off on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 1 p.m. at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. The game will air nationally on FOX.

This will mark the seventh appearance in the Mountain West Championship Game for the Broncos, the most of any school in the conference. Boise State has participated in five of the last six MW Championship Games. UNLV will be making its first appearance in the conference title game.

Boise State, San José State, and UNLV all finished the regular season with identical 6-2 MW records. Since all three teams did not face each other this season and no team was ranked in the latest College Football Playoff (CFP) rankings, the three-way tie was broken by computer rankings from Anderson & Hester, Colley Matrix, Massey and Wolfe.

According to the average computer rankings, UNLV finished at 44.50, while Boise State was at 55.75 and San José State at 58.50. Therefore, the Broncos and Rebels secured their spots in the MW Championship. UNLV had the higher overall average ranking and earned the right to host the title tilt.

Boise State (7-5, 6-2) defeated San Jose State, 35-27, during the regular season but did not play UNLV. San Jose State (7-5, 6-2) edged UNLV, 37-31, Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas, handing UNLV (9-3, 6-2) its first home loss of the season.

By advancing to the MW Championship Game, Spencer Danielson becomes just the second interim head coach in college football history to take over midseason and lead his team to its league championship game. The only other coach to achieve that feat was Clay Helton with Southern Cal in 2015.

Saturday's game will mark the 12th meeting between Boise State and UNLV with the Broncos holding an 8-3 advantage in the all-time series. This will be the first meeting between the two teams since the 2019 season and Boise State has won the past six meetings. The Orange and Blue are 3-3 all-time when playing UNLV in Las Vegas but this will be the first trip to the recently built Allegiant Stadium for Boise State.

Tickets for the MW Championship Game can be purchased here will go on sale at the Boise State Ticket Office shortly and will end at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The Mountain West eliminated divisional play in May 2022, which required the MW Football Championship tiebreakers to be thoroughly reviewed and enhanced this past August. The CFP ranking (or computer rankings if no team is ranked in the CFP) became the third tiebreak after win percentage in Conference play and head-to-head matchups. The new parameters were implemented to provide the opportunity for the top two teams to play in the championship game and advance to a New Year's Six game.

In 2023, the Mountain West has seven bowl-eligible teams and is one of six leagues with at least half of its teams with five or fewer losses.
