Non-conference date against Oregon shifted, Portland State game announced
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – As Boise State head coach Spencer Danielson has stoked the excitement of Bronco Nation with announcements of his two coordinators, fans everywhere can carry that excitement into the offseason. The Broncos learned the 2024 home and away designations of their seven conference opponents plus their assignment in the league's new scheduling alliance with the remaining members of the Pac-12 Conference.
Boise State will welcome Nevada, San Diego State, Utah State and Washington State to The Blue next fall while making trips to Hawai'i, San José State, UNLV and Wyoming. The Broncos' previously scheduled home game against Oregon State remains on the slate as a nonconference game in addition to the scheduling agreement. Games against Pac-12 members will not count towards the MW standings.
The new 7+1 format comes after the Mountain West reached a scheduling agreement with the remaining members of the Pac-12 Conference – Oregon State and Washington State – allowing teams in both leagues to fill out complete 2024 football schedules. Each MW program will play seven league opponents, and play either Oregon State or Washington State within the model, with an even split of four home games and four away games among the eight contests. Working off the previous three-year schedule rotation (2023-2025), matchups were rebalanced utilizing the same principles to minimize the impact on the original 2024 schedule. The schedule format and agreement with Oregon State and Washington State provides additional strength of schedule to the MW.
The 2024 schedule will play out over 14 weeks, concluding with the MW Championship Game on Saturday, Dec. 7, featuring the two MW teams with the highest conference winning percentages.
Additionally, Boise State announced that its 2024 nonconference game at Oregon will now take place the week of Sept. 7. The date for the home game against Oregon State, previously scheduled on that day, will be announced at a later date, along with dates for games in the scheduling agreement. The Broncos will also host Portland State at Albertsons Stadium the week of Sept. 21, ensuring six home games on The Blue next fall. Exact dates of nonconference games are subject to shift based on national television selections.
The date change for the game against Oregon comes as part of an amendment to the overall series with the Ducks. The previously-scheduled three-game series set for 2024, 2025 and 2026 has been converted to two guarantee games in which Oregon will pay Boise State a total of $2.6 million to visit Eugene in 2024 and 2026. The game in 2025 will no longer be played. Boise State will have additional announcements about the 2025 schedule in the coming months.
The 2024 MW football membership includes Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawai'i, Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State, San José State, UNLV, Utah State, and Wyoming.
Boise State enters the 2024 season as the reigning Mountain West Champions after a 44-20 win at UNLV on Dec. 2. The next day, it was announced that the interim tag would be removed from Spencer Danielson's title.
