Stockton joins Bronco Nation following five seasons at Ball State
BOISE, Idaho – Following a five-year stint as a defensive coordinator at Ball State, Tyler Stockton is joining the Boise State football coaching staff as the co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach beginning with the 2024 season.
Â
Head coach Spencer Danielson made the announcement Thursday, filling one of two open positions remaining on his coaching staff. Stockton has been a Broyles Award nominee in each of the past four seasons, including both in 2022 and 2023.
Â
"Tyler Stockton brings an impressive resume to Boise State, and I expect him to fit right in with our program," Danielson said of his newest coaching staff addition. "His time as a player at Notre Dame and his experience coaching shows that he understands what is required to win championships and bowl games. I look forward to his imprint on our secondary as we continue to uphold the standard at Boise State."
Â
Stockton was promoted to assistant head coach/defensive coordinator/inside linebackers coach two years ago at Ball State, shortly after being named to ESPN's 45 minority coaches under the age of 45 list.
Â
The recognition proved to be well-founded as he led the Ball State defense to top-25 national rankings in rush defense (20th) and total defense (21st) while ranking 32nd nationally in pass defense. His Cardinal squad ranked 13th nationally in red zone forced fumbles and fewest explosive runs allowed while ranking 15th in rushing yards after contact allowed.
Â
"I am very excited to come to Boise State and join the special program that Spencer Danielson is building," Stockton said of his appointment. "He has an incredible vision for this program, one that will lead it to championships while teaching with love and care for the players. Boise State's fans are the best in the country, and they impact games unlike any other school. My family and I are so excited to become a part of Bronco Nation and to not only join, but contribute, to this community. This is a wonderful opportunity as Coach Danielson and I share very similar visions for a program and how we can truly impact our student-athletes on and off the field."
Â
That marked an impressive improvement in pass defense from the 2022 season, when the Cardinals ranked 48th nationally by yielding just 216.1 yards per game. That was due in part to Ball State ranking 21st in the country in team pass efficiency defense while allowing only one opponent over the final seven games to score more than 30 points.
Â
In 2021, Stockton was named to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) 35 Under 35 list during a season when Ball State forced 19 turnovers while maintaining a plus-7 turnover margin and picked off 15 passes, ranking 14th in the country. His defense allowed just 24.0 points per game in league play. Stockton coached All-MAC selections Bryce Cosby and Jaylin Thomas, who ended their careers in the top 10 nationally among active leaders in tackles as well as top 10 in Ball State history in career tackles. Following that campaign, he was promoted to assistant head coach.
Â
Stockton was handed sole reins of the Ball State defense starting with the 2020 season, moving from the Co-DC role. In his first year as defensive coordinator, he helped Ball State to its first MAC Championship since 1996, the first bowl victory in school history – a 34-13 win over Mountain West Champion San Jose State in the Arizona Bowl – and its first year-end rankings in the AP and Coaches polls. At age 30 that season he was the second-youngest FBS defensive coordinator and a Broyles Award nominee.
Â
He coached four All-MAC selections at inside linebacker in his first two seasons at Ball State, including Jacob White (2019) and Brandon Martin (2020) on the first team and Jaylin Thomas twice named to the third team. In 2020, Martin was named the MAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year while the Cardinal defense improved 49 spots in the national scoring defense rankings at 25.8 points per game. Ball State led the league and ranked 15th nationally with 24 forced turnovers in 2019, his first season in Muncie.
Â
Stockton made the move to Ball State in 2019 following three years at Western Illinois where he served as defensive line coach and run game coordinator from 2016-17 before being elevated to defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach in 2018. During his final season with the Leathernecks, Western Illinois ranked 23rd nationally in FCS in yards allowed per game (327.9) and sixth in sacks (36).
Â
He made his coaching start at UConn as a defensive graduate assistant coach from 2014-15. During his final season with the Huskies, UConn ranked 15th nationally in scoring defense and earned a spot in the 2015 St. Petersburg Bowl after the team finished tied for third in the East Division of the American Athletic Conference.
Â
A two-time graduate of Notre Dame, Stockton was a five-year member of the Fighting Irish football team (2009-13) where he played on the defensive line. He helped Notre Dame win the 2010 Sun and 2013 Pinstripe Bowls while leading the Irish to the 2013 BCS National Championship game. After earning his bachelor's degree in 2013, he remained in South Bend to get his MBA in corporate finance in 2014. In between, he worked summer internships at Goldman Sachs, Young Entrepreneurs Across America, Morgan Stanly Smith Barney and ETL Associates.
Â
Stockton and his wife, Haley have two children – son, Everett, and daughter, Belle.
