Secures highest score in program and Mountain West history

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State Athletics surpassed its all-time best NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR) according to data released by the NCAA Wednesday. The latest figures include the cohort that entered college during the 2016-17 academic year, while the four-class average includes student-athletes who entered college from 2013-14 through 2016-17 academic years.

The Broncos recorded a four-class average GSR of 94 percent. Boise State has set or tied its department record in each of the last 15 reports.

Boise State's GSR of 94 percent is the top overall score in the Mountain West this year and tied for the highest score in conference history. Air Force (twice) and Utah State each recorded a score of 94 percent in previous reports.

"We are so proud of all our student-athletes, their commitment to their education, and representing the Blue and Orange on the athletic field," said Jeramiah Dickey, athletic director. "Credit the entire athletic department and the holistic culture embraced by everyone, starting with the student-athletes themselves and including the coaches, academic staff and other members of the Boise State Athletics."

Members of this cohort include the following Boise State graduates.

* Alexander Mattison, football, current running back for the Minnesota Vikings.
* Courtney McGregor, represented home country of New Zealand at the 2016 Olympics.
* Kendra Noneman, women's track & field, a Ph.D. student at Carnegie Mellon University.
* Raimee Sherle Ranstrom, women's soccer, named to the Mountain West 25th Season Soccer Team.

The department had five women's sport programs – basketball, golf, gymnastics, tennis and volleyball – record perfect GSR scores of 100 percent. Golf has recorded a perfect score in each of the last 18 reports.

On the men's side, football's GSR of 95 percent is the highest in program history, and matches Air Force's score for the best in Mountain West history.  Among Football Bowl Subdivision programs, the Broncos have the eighth-best overall score.

Each year, the NCAA publicly announces the GSR of all Division I institutions. The graduation-rate data are based on a six-year cohort prescribed by the U.S. Department of Education, the most recent version including freshmen scholarship student-athletes that entered college in 2016.

The Division I Board of Directors created the GSR in response to Division I college and university presidents who wanted data that more accurately reflected the mobility of college students than the federal graduation rate. The federal rate counts any student who leaves a school as an academic failure, no matter whether he or she enrolls at another school. Also, the federal rate does not recognize students who enter school as transfer students.

The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. This calculation makes it a more complete and accurate look at student-athlete success.
