FRISCO, Texas – For the second time this season, Sierra Land and Madison Nichols were named the Southland Conference Pair of the Week, the league announced, Tuesday.
The duo, who have competed as the team's No. 1 pair all season, went undefeated over the weekend at the San Jose State Tournament. The tandem started the tournament with the decisive win for the Broncos, defeating Sophia Brandstetter and Hana Makonova 25-23, 16-21, 15-11 to lead the squad past CSU Bakersfield, 3-2. The pair followed up by defeating Oregon's top pair, Zoe Almanza and Chloe Brown, in straight sets, 21-12, 21-18.
Land and Nichols went the full distance in their next two matches, defeating San Francisco's Letizia Aquilino and McKenna Towne 14-21, 21-18, 15-10 before taking down San Jose State's Cheyenne Rice and Jaida Ward 21-13, 21-23, 15-12.
The pair is 9-8 over the course of the season, and needs just four wins to record the most wins in a single season at the No. 1 position in program history. Erin Martin and Yasmin Tan hold the record at the top spot, recording 12 wins last season.
With this week's award, the Broncos, who joined the Southland Conference in June 2022, have won three of the conference's four Pair of the Week awards this season. Land and Nichols received the first honor of the season on Feb. 28, while teammates Ava Anderson and Rorianna Chartier earned the award the following week on March 7.
Boise State, who is off to its best start in program history, wraps up its California road trip this week. The Broncos face Colorado Mesa and Long Beach State today in Long Beach, Calif., followed by a pair of duals against Concordia Irvine and Irvine Valley on Wednesday in Irvine, Calif.
