Bronco Athletics Receives Grant to Share Mental Health Resources with Local Schools

Investment by local foundation provides more programming to address the mental health crisis

BOISE, Idaho - Treasure Valley-based Holland M. Ware Charitable Foundation (HMWCF) has awarded Boise State Athletics a grant to expand mental health resources to four local high schools with the launch of the BroncoBOLD High School Ambassador Program, director of athletics Jeramiah Dickey announced today.

"The generous grant from HMWCF underscores our commitment to serve as a community resource, especially in this life-impacting area," said Dickey.  "The BroncoBOLD mental health initiative is addressing the challenges faced by our student-athletes and staff today and equipping them with the tools and skills to embrace the future."

Launched in the fall of 2019, BroncoBOLD is a student-athlete mental health awareness initiative comprising three pillars:  reduce stigma, raise awareness, and cultivate resilience in order to spread a message of hope and help to the entire campus and greater community. Programming has included a monthly Mental Rep Talk series with topics ranging from mindfulness training to tips on managing stress and how to support a friend who is struggling, all to help normalize conversations around mental health.

"The BroncoBOLD mental health initiative, based on education, prevention, and building awareness is working," said Brenda Thueson, HMWCF Executive Director and Trustee. "We are thrilled to provide the resources to share this important initiative with area high schools."

In February of this year, the NCAA announced that the term "mental health" will be included in the NCAA constitution, which all member schools, conferences and divisions have agreed to uphold. This historic inclusion — initiated by SAAC members from each division — displays a strong commitment by the NCAA to its student-athletes' health, safety and well-being. Institutions are now required to "facilitate an environment that reinforces physical and mental health within athletics by ensuring access to appropriate resources and open engagement with respect to physical and mental health" (NCAA Constitution, Article 1-D). More details are available at  An open letter to NCAA student-athletes on mental health .
