IRVING, Texas – Boise State tight end Riley Smith has been selected as a semifinalist for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy, the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) announced today.
Smith, a sixth-year from St. Augustine, Fla., is a team captain for the Broncos. He has played in all four games, making three starts. He has 3 receptions for 31 yards, including a season-long 17-yard catch against North Dakota. He is a consistent blocker for a Bronco rushing attack that ranks third in the Mountain West with 171.0 yards per game. In the last two games, Boise State has 373 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
Smith was named to the All-Mountain West Preseason Third Team by Phil Steele and Athlon. He is a three-time Academic All-Mountain West selection and three-time Mountain West Scholar-Athlete. This is the third-straight season a player has been selected as a Campbell Trophy semifinalist under Andy Avalos. The previous selections were Riley Whimpey in 2021 and John Ojukwu in 2022.
Celebrating its 34th year, the Campbell Trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance, and exemplary leadership. Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the awards must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of playing eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, which is comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers, and athletics administrators.
