College Football News recognizes nation’s best punter

BOISE, Idaho – James Ferguson-Reynolds was recognized a fourth time for his efforts during the 2023 season as College Football News bestowed upon the Boise State punter Third Team All-America honors.

The Geelong, Australia native had already received All-America honors from the AFCA (Second Team), Sports Illustrated (Second Team) and the Associated Press (Third Team). He joins Colorado State's Mohamed Kamara as the only Mountain West players recognized by the College Football News.

This follows being named the National Statistical Champion for 2023 in punting after averaging 49.7 yards per punt. That average marks the sixth-best season average in FBS history, just shy of a spot in the top five as he finishes right behind Iowa's Reggie Roby posting a 49.84 average in 1981.

Ferguson-Reynolds shatters the school record of 45.8 yards per punt originally set by Kyle Brotzman in 2008. The mark ranks third in Mountain West history behind NCAA and MW record holder Matt Araiza (San Diego State) averaging 51.2 yards per punt and Colorado State's Ryan Stonehouse averaging 50.9 yards per punt, both in 2021.

He becomes the eighth Bronco to claim a statistical national championship, a feat most recently achieved by Jonah Dalmas (field goals) in 2021. Dalmas recently announced he would be returning to Boise State for the 2024 season for his final year of eligibility, rejoining Ferguson-Reynolds to create one of the most successful kicking tandems in the country.

Throughout 14 games, Ferguson-Reynolds totaled 55 punts that traveled 2,735 yards with eight ending in a touchback and five being fair caught. Of his 55 punts, 52.3% (29) of them traveled 50 yards or more while 41.8% (23) landed inside the 20.

Fans can now reserve their seats for the 2024 season today by placing a deposit of just $24 down for new season tickets or renewals. The 2024 home schedule features Nevada, Oregon State, Portland State, San Diego State, Utah State and Washington State visiting The Blue as the Broncos look to become the first Mountain West program to repeat as champion since San Diego State in 2015-16.
