Broncos Hold Off South Dakota State to Advance to Cayman Islands Classic Championship

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman IslandsJavan Buchanan poured in a season-high 28 points to lead Boise State past South Dakota State, 83-82, in the semifinal of the Cayman Islands Classic on Monday. The Broncos (5-1) staved off late-game pressure to secure their spot in Tuesday's championship game at 5:30 p.m. MT.
 
The contest was a back-and-forth battle with 13 ties and 17 lead changes and showcased sharp shooting from both sides. Boise State shot 47.5% from the field, including 41.4% from beyond the arc, while South Dakota State countered with 45.9% overall and 42.1% from three-point range.
 
Buchanan's offensive outburst, featuring four three-pointers and a clutch layup in the final minute, proved decisive. Alvaro Cardenas added a season-high 16 points and seven assists, and Julian Bowie chipped in 13 points off the bench, including a critical three-pointer late in the game.
 
South Dakota State (5-2) stayed close behind a balanced attack, led by Joe Sayler and Oscar Cluff, who each tallied 19 points. Cluff also recorded a double-double with 14 rebounds.
 
After Boise State took a narrow lead into halftime, 44-42, the teams continued to trade baskets in the second half. A three-pointer by Buchanan gave the Broncos a five-point cushion with 7:42 remaining, but the Jackrabbits clawed back, pulling within one in the closing seconds. The Broncos were called for a foul with one second remaining, and Owen Larson hit the first free throw but missed the second to fail to tie the game and possibly send it into overtime.
 
With the victory, the Broncos advanced to Boston College in the championship game. Boston College defeated Missouri State, 76-74, in the other semifinal on Monday.
 
NOTES
Boise State's bench outscored South Dakota State's, 44-13. In addition to Buchanan, Julian Bowie joined him in double-digit scoring off the bench with a career-high 13 points, including 10 points in the first half.
 
Buchanan was 11-fo-17 shooting, including 4-of-8 from three.
 
Tyson Degenhart had double-digit points for the sixth time this season. He finished the game with 11 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. In the second half, he had seven points, five rebounds and five assists.
 
The Broncos had a season-high 12 three-pointers made.
 
The 41.5% shooting percentage from three-point range was Boise State's second-best this season (45.0% vs. Oakland, Nov. 6).
 
Boise State had 20 assists on its 29 field goals made. It has 20+ assists in four of its first six games this year. It had one game of 20+ assists in all of 2023-24.
 
The Broncos have shot 47.5% or better from the field in four of their first six games.
 
Boise State outscored South Dakota State in the paint, 34-30.
 
South Dakota had its biggest lead, five points, with 10:59 left in second half.
