BOISE, Idaho – Jip van Assnedelft, a Boise State men's tennis team sophomore, has been named the Ford Boise State Student-Athlete of the Week. This is the second honor of the week for van Assendelft, who was also named the Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Wednesday.
Jip van Assendelft led the Broncos at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala., by recording a pair of top-20 victories.
The sophomore from the Netherlands went 1-1 in singles versus nationally ranked opponents in Montgomery. The victory came in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, against fourth-ranked Ozan Baris of Michigan State.
That win is the highest-ranked singles victory by a Bronco since 2000 (we cannot verify rankings before 2000); surpassing his coach, Luke Shields' win over No. 5 Ludovic Walter of Duke at the 2005 NCAA National Singles Championship on May 26, 2005.
In doubles, van Assendelft and his partner Sam Sippel also went 1-1 versus top-20 ranked pairs. The Bronco duo faced both the No. 1 and No. 16 teams in the nation.
The lone victory came against the 16th-ranked doubles team in Old Dominion's Codie van Schalkwyk and his brother Connor van Schalkwyk by a 6-3 score.
The win ranks as the sixth-highest doubles win by a Bronco pair since 2000 and the highest since 2017.
Van Assendelft and his teammates are off to Tempe, Ariz., this week for the Diablo College Tennis Invitational, where they will face another challenging slate of opponents, including six teams of whom are ranked in the ITA's Top 75.
