Boise State one of five teams to have multiple defensive backs recognized
BOISE, Idaho – The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and Jim Thorpe Association tabbed Boise State seniors A'Marion McCoy and Seyi Oladipo to the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award Preseason Watch List, the organizations jointly announced Wednesday. The Jim Thorpe Award is given annually to the nation's top defensive back.
McCoy is a Preseason All-Mountain West selection and was named to the East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 Watchlist. Athlon Sports and Phil Steele also recognized him on their Preseason All-MW teams. In 2023, he earned All-MW Honorable Mention after tallying a team-high three interceptions. The cornerback tied for second on the team with five pass breakups and added a pair of TFLs, including a solo sack. In the MW Championship, McCoy had a season-high six tackles and recorded his third interception.
Oladipo has played in all 40 games since arriving at Boise State in 2021, totaling 118 tackles, 11.0 TFLs and four interceptions. He is a 2024 Preseason All-MW Second Team selection by Athlon Sports and Phil Steele. Last year, he ranked second on the team in tackles (70) and third on the team in TFLs (8.5), earning All-MW Honorable Mention. The safety notched 3.0 TFLs and forced a fumble against New Mexico. In 2021, he was named MW Freshman of the Week after recording a pair of interceptions against UTEP. He had a 48-yard interception return for a touchdown in 2022.
McCoy and Oladipo are two of 42 players on the 2024 watch list, making Boise State one of five teams to have multiple players selected. The Broncos are joined by Appalachian State, Georgia, Notre Dame and Ohio State. Semifinalists for the award will be announced Oct. 29. Three finalists will be selected Nov. 26. The 2024 Paycom Jim Thorpe Award will be awarded on ESPN's live presentation of The Home Depot College Football Awards, set for Dec. 12.

Led by Spencer Danielson in his first full season, Boise State looks to become the first Mountain West program to win back-to-back championships since San Diego State did so in 2015-16. Achieving such a feat will put Boise State in the discussion for the new, expanded, 12-team College Football Playoff format beginning this fall. Last year, Danielson became the first coach in college football history to win a conference championship with an interim title.
