Redshirt junior one of 51 linebackers recognized
BOISE, Idaho – The 2024 preseason watch list for the Butkus Award was announced, with Boise State redshirt junior Andrew Simpson garnering inclusion. This is the 40th year of the award, which is presented annually to the nation's top linebacker.
Simpson's preseason accolades include an All-America nod from College Football Network, who also named him Preseason Mountain West Linebacker of the Year. He made the Preseason All-MW team and was tabbed preseason All-MW by three outlets.
In 2023, Simpson ranked fourth in the MW in TFLs (16.0) and fumbles recovered (2), while adding 6.5 sacks and a pair of interceptions. The St. John Bosco High School product recorded at least 0.5 TFLs in 10 games, including a seven-game stretch where he tallied 13.5. He earned College Football Network All-America third team and All-MW second team honors.
Semifinalists are expected to be named on Nov. 4, with finalists named on Nov. 25. The winner will be named by Dec. 10 and honored at an event planned for early 2025 at Memorial Stadium at the University of Illinois as part of the Big Ten Network television special.

Led by Spencer Danielson in his first full season, Boise State looks to become the first Mountain West program to win back-to-back championships since San Diego State did so in 2015-16. Achieving such a feat will put Boise State in the discussion for the new, expanded, 12-team College Football Playoff format beginning this fall. Last year, Danielson became the first coach in college football history to win a conference championship with an interim title.
