BOISE, Idaho – Boise State collected a pair of weekly conference honors, as cornerback Jeremiah Earby was named Old Trapper Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week and running back Sire Gaines was tabbed Old Trapper Mountain West Freshman of the Week. This is the second time this season each player has been recognized with their respective award. It is the first time the Broncos have had multiple winners in the same week.
Earby, a senior from East Palo Alto, California, tallied two interceptions, three tackles, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery in Boise State's 49-21 win over Colorado State. He is the only FBS player to intercept two passes and recover a fumble in a game this season. His first interception came at the Boise State 10-yard line and he returned his second interception 37 yards. This was his second multi-interception game of the season, giving him four picks on the year, tied for 10th in the country. Earby and the Broncos have the 11th-best pass defense in the nation, limiting opponents to 165.5 yards per game.
Gaines, a redshirt freshman from Perris, California, notched a career-best 149 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries, scoring on runs of 3 and 8 yards. He added a 12-yard reception to finish with a career-high 161 yards from scrimmage, ending the contest with 101 yards after contact and seven missed tackles forced. His 86.2 PFF Offensive Grade ranked second among FBS running backs with 10+ rushing attempts. Of his 22 rushes, 11 gained a first down. The Broncos finished the game with 533 yards, the team's fourth 500-yard effort of the season. Boise State ran for a season-high six touchdowns in the win.
Gaines has three MW honors in his career, all as Freshman of the Week. The Broncos have seven total honors this year, with Dylan Riley (two-time Offensive Player of the Week) and Boen Phelps (Defensive Player of the Week) earning the other three. This is the first time in program history Boise State has three players win multiple awards in a season.
