BOISE, Idaho – Boise State quarterback Maddux Madsen has been named to the watch list for the 89th Maxwell Award, the organization announced. The award is presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football. Former Bronco running back Ashton Jeanty was the Maxwell Award recipient in 2024, the first winner in Boise State history.
A native of Lehi, Utah, Madsen is one of 80 players on the preseason watch list. The group includes 47 quarterbacks, 26 running backs and seven wide receivers. The captain is one of two MW players featured on the list, the other being UNLV running back Jai'Den Thomas. This marks the sixth-straight season a Bronco has been named to the Maxwell Award Watch List. Hank Bachmeier and George Holani were selected in 2020, followed by Khalil Shakir in 2021. Holani repeated the next two seasons, with Taylen Green joining him in 2023. Jeanty was added to the midseason list in 2023 before earning a spot on the 2024 preseason list.
Madsen led the Mountain West with 3,018 passing yards and 23 touchdowns last year, earning All-MW Honorable Mention and a spot in the Davey O'Brien Award Class of 2024. His passing efficiency of 142.5 ranked second in the conference and he was the only player in the country to throw at least 12 touchdowns and less than two interceptions in league play. The American Fork HS product added 221 yards and five touchdowns on the ground, boasting a 13-2 career record as Boise State's starting quarterback. The redshirt junior was voted Preseason MW Offensive Player of the Year and was tabbed Preseason All-MW First Team by Athlon Sports and Phil Steele.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced Tuesday, November 11, while the three finalists for the Maxwell Award will be unveiled Tuesday, November 25. The winner of the 89th Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Thursday, December 11.
