The hand-painted helmet will be worn for the Sept. 27 game vs. App State

BOISE, Idaho - Showcasing the beauty of Boise, The Blue and the state of Idaho, Boise State football revealed the "Front Porch of Idaho" hand-painted helmet the team will wear for its game against App State on Sept. 27. Wrapped around a traditional blue helmet, the design, hand-crafted by artist Armando Villarreal, salutes some key icons of the Boise community.

The specialty helmet brings Idaho's story to life with a white airbrushed design accented in Boise State's signature orange. On the right side, a galloping Bronco charges forward while the left side proudly displays the Idaho State Capitol in front of the scenic foothills that serve as a backdrop for the "City of Trees." The back features Albertsons Stadium and its famous blue turf above an array of trees lining the Boise River. Final additions of orange in the Bronco's eye and in the end zones add a bold flash of Bronco pride.

Bringing the design full circle, the bumper on the front of the helmet displays "208," symbolizing Idaho's area code and height of its Capitol dome.

Boise State football has represented the state of Idaho at the highest of levels. In addition to being the only FBS program in the state, it is one of the winningest FBS programs in the nation since 2000 with 262 wins. Since elevating to the FBS in 1996, the Broncos have a 285-87 record, giving them the highest all-time FBS winning percentage (.766) of any active team.

Boise State also has 27 straight winning seasons, which is the longest active streak in the country, and reached the College Football Playoff in 2024 after winning its second straight Mountain West conference title. The Broncos have been dominant at home, compiling a 142-16 record on The Blue since 2000.

The helmet design will be featured on t-shirts and available at the following retail outlets starting Sept. 9.
  • The Blue and Orange Store - Allen Noble Hall of Fame at Albertsons Stadium and Boise Town Square Mall
  • Scheels - Meridian location
  • Fred Meyer - eight locations across the Treasure Valley
  • Fanatics - online
Villarreal has done individually airbrushed helmets for 12 programs since 2018, including BYU, Maryland, Michigan, Tennessee, UCF and Utah. A former member of the U.S. Army Reserve who was deployed both to Kosovo and Iraq in the early 2000s, Villarreal did his best to balance his city job with airbrushing hundreds of helmets each year, until 2022 when he transitioned to a full-time artist, and is now a leader in this specialized field.

Each helmet undergoes a detailed process, beginning with sanding to create a surface that ensures proper adhesion for paint and design. The helmets are then scuffed, airbrushed, and cleaned, with each one requiring a minimum of three hours to complete. Fulfilling an entire order takes no less than two months.

A limited number of helmets will be available for purchase for Bronco Athletic Association (BAA) members. BAA members were emailed an interest form and orders will be fulfilled based on BAA priority ranking.

Limited tickets for the Sept. 27 game against App State are available online at BroncoSports.com, over the phone with a representative of the Boise State Athletics Ticket Office at (208) 426-4737, or in person at the Boise State Athletics Ticket Office located at the southwest corner of Albertsons Stadium.
